Doing The Gooey
A participatory performance/ installation

This ongoing experimental project takes the daily use of all kinds of GUIs (graphical user interface) as its point of departure and transfers all these flattened movements, communicative techniques and screen-based commands back into a spatial, haptic reality using simple materials and performance.

Through a series of workshops run by the artists Malve Lippmann & Catriona Shaw, a group of ca. 14 real, live networkers and programmers created a massive, squelchy, fleshy, absurd human GOOEY and answered the following: How do you act the role of a cursor? Can you hold an email? Are our ‚friends‘ really as static as they look on our screens? How should we move like a Gooey tells us, only in real life? Or in other words - how can we DO the Gooey?

The first Doing the Gooey performance took place in Berlin in June 2009.
